Study Summary

The Social Mobile Approaches to Reducing Weight (SMART) 2.0 study is a UCSD-based clinical trial led by Dr. Job Godino (NCT03907462). This study was a 24-month parallel-group randomized controlled weight-loss trial that included 638 university-affiliated participants aged 18-35 years from universities and colleges in San Diego, CA. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a highly personalized, 2-year intervention that uses popular mobile and social technologies to promote weight loss among young adults. All participants received a Fitbit activity tracker, a connected scale, and the corresponding app. Participants randomized to one intervention group received evidence-based information about weight loss and related health behavior via personalized daily text messages, related content on various social media platforms, and access to a health coach-moderated online group with 6-10 other participants. Participants randomized to a second intervention group received all these elements in addition to technology-mediated health coaching sessions.
