FHCSD, in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego, has launched a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening study offering a cell-free DNA (cfDNA) blood test. This study is funded by Curebound Equity Grants and the cfDNA blood tests have been donated by Guardant Health. Among patients age-eligible for CRC screening, not up-to-date, we are implementing a 2-arm, pragmatic, randomized controlled trial comparing offers of standard screening options (at home fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or colonoscopy) vs. offers of expanded options at home (FIT, colonoscopy, or in clinic cfDNA plus at home FIT), set at a FHCSD clinic serving individuals at increased risk for inequities in CRC outcomes. Results will inform guidelines and policymakers on whether cfDNA should be supported as a screening option and support planning for a large-scale trial examining the impact of a cfDNA screening option on CRC and advanced neoplasia detection.
