Study Summary

The Community-Driven Research for Health Equity is a 5-year initiative that aims to reduce health inequities and improve outcomes by involving historically underrepresented communities in research. This program is funded by the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is a collaboration among the following partners: University of California, San Diego, the San Diego Childhood Obesity Initiative, YMCA of San Diego County, Olivewood Gardens, Asian Pacific Islander Initiative, and Family Health Centers of San Diego. The program will focus on advancing food justice, the idea that everyone should have access to healthy and sustainable food, and on reshaping the way resources, knowledge, and wisdom flow between communities, universities, and other institutions. The program plans to do this by implementing a community-led granting program to fund community priorities, an academic-led scientific methods program to support these grants, and a postdoctoral training program to build skills in food justice. The goal is to ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has access to healthy food and can achieve better cardiovascular health through research and collective action that is community-driven, inclusive, and diverse.
